We’re still more than a month away from Memorial Day, but did you know that the 100 days between Memorial Day (Monday, May 25, 2026) and Labor Day (Monday, September 7, 2026) are known as the “100 deadliest days” when it comes to traffic fatalities? In particular, this is a time that sees VERY high rates of traffic fatalities involving teen drivers, many of whom are fairly new to driving and may not exercise the caution that older, more seasoned driver have. In fact, last year it was reported that, between 2019 and 2023, 13,135 people nationwide were killed in car crashes involving teen drivers, with 30% occurring during the 100 deadliest days. Jake Nelson, Director of Traffic Safety advocacy and Research at Triple-A, believes that the greater unsupervised time teens spend during the Summer Vacation is a major contributing factor in this trend, and he encourages families to strongly consider additional driver education classes offered through Triple-A as well as parent-teen safe driving agreements to set clearly-defines expectations for new drivers1. As car crashes are the leading cause of death for American teenagers, this is great, sound advice! It is speculated that the underlying causes of these statistics involve a combination of factors:

           •	School is out, and teens are eager to explore their young adulthood. Who can remember the excitement of having “new wheels” and the freedom to expand their social lives2?

           •	Inexperience is clearly a factor. How skilled can you really be at something you’ve only been doing a short while2?

           •	Speeding is exhilarating when you’re a new driver….I know. It’s also dangerous as things happen faster when you’re moving faster. I did my share of racing when I was a kid, and, luckily, I never got into an accident….but I DID get a lot of speeding tickets which eventually taught me to be more responsible2.

           •	Distracted driving is deadly for all age groups, but is particularly dangerous for teens, where it accounts for around 60% of all accidents involving teens. Teach your kids to PUT THE CELL PHONE DOWN, not to eat or drink while driving, and to focus on the road2.

           •	Drunk driving is also a major problem that spans age groups….but, with regards to teen drivers, inexperience plus impairment of reflexes and thinking can be particularly deadly. In 2022, 30% of young drivers between 15 and 20 who were killed in car accidents had BACs of 0.01g/dl2.

PARENTS, BE PREPARED! Talk to YOUR young drivers and make them aware that driving is inherently dangerous: there are always risks. But, during the 100 deadliest days, being safe may not only save them from being sorry….it may save their lives!

How Are Euro Imports Different from Domestic Vehicles?

European import cars and trucks and their domestic counterparts have some pretty significant differences that manifest from fundamentally different priorities in their design and engineering. For example, European vehicles are typically designed to be smaller to better navigate the narrow, often winding streets of the older European towns. The larger frame sizes of “American Muscle Cars”, by contrast, were based around the concepts of POWER and spaciousness. And while European car designs tend to be more elegant and sophisticated in their aesthetics, American cars tend to prioritize more functional aesthetics, with size and practicality being placed above elegance. This dichotomy very concisely reflects the different cultural values of Europe versus the USA. In addition to being smaller, European auto design teams tend to value precision maneuverability and agility to a greater degree than American design teams. Being agile means better precision moves on narrow, winding streets, so, again, being small, fast, precise, and agile become functional outcomes of European architecture. The USA, with its “wide open spaces” doesn’t value those features to the same degree, where raw power on straight-aways and being built for long-hauls cross-country are more desirable. HOWEVER, speed limits are typically more tightly controlled in the USA than in Europe (think Autobahn), so top end speeds tend to be higher for European cars. European autos also have to conform to tighter environmental standard for emissions with their greater emphasis on environmentally friendly features. Hence, the emissions systems are more sophisticated and precisely monitored in Euro imports than in their domestic counterparts. If you’ve driven a Euro import and gotten a “check engine light” it’s usually due to malfunctions somewhere in the emissions system. Domestic brands also often lag behind their Euro counterparts in fuel economy as a result of the goal of minimal environmental impact. Lastly, transmission preferences are a major difference between Euro imports and their domestic counterparts. In Europe, manual transmissions are often preferred, but automatic transmissions are more popular in the USA, so a lot of Euro imports ARE equipped with them here.

A Beginner Guide to Owning A Euro Import

At Ditmire Motorworks, we get to meet a lot of different people, ranging from people who have been driving Euro imports for decades to people who are new to them. And some of the "newbies" can be a little nervous about how best to take care of their new rides. I can sympathize: I got my first Mercedes when I was in my 50's, and, like many, had heard that the maintenance was a bit of an ordeal. Well, it turns out it really isn't....it's just sticking to schedules. Hello, I'm Michael, and I'm the VP of Ditmire's (and Beth Harvie's Husband), and I thought I'd pass along some tips for new owners. An overarching thing I'd suggest: look at your car as an INVESTMENT....not just basic transportation. Doing the "right things" will fall out of that mindset:

          1. First off, follow the recommended service and maintenance schedules that are prescribed for your car. This was always a little more loose when I drove domestic. I'm now sticking closer to the schedules and not putting stuff off.

          2. Secondly, only use high-quality synthetic motor oils. When I began to look into this, it was easy and quick to see that this alone is a HUGE part of maintainenance. I also became mindful of my fluid levels: oil, coolant, brake fluids, transmission fluid, and power steering fluid. Just a little bit of attention to these can keep you problem-free!

          3. Thirdly, be mindful of tire pressures and any driving issues which might be related to the tires/wheels.

          4. Fourth, check belts, hoses, and batteries periodically, particularly in Winter.

          5. Don't be afraid to ask for help. I was new to the Euro scene, and these cars are "computers with wheels", a long way from the '78 Buick Regal I started with back in the day! I was a customer of Ditmire's before I came to work here, and it didn't take me long to recognize the expertise that our technicians had. I felt like these guys were "partners" in taking care of Bruno, my Mercedes E350. I believed enough in them, I came here to help THEM!

DWI: A MATTER OF LIFE AND DEATH

Last year, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), over 13,000 died in car accidents related to driving while intoxicated….and that marked the second consecutive year that this mark was achieved. In 2022, roughly 32% of all traffic-related fatalities were related to DWI, and that number was 31% in 20211. With the “100 most dangerous driving days” (Memorial Day to Labor Day) rapidly approaching, more people are about to be hitting the roads for Summer activities including vacations, and the risk of even one person driving impaired becomes even higher. Recent statistics indicated that the 21-24 (roughly 27% of all traffic-related deaths), 25-34 (roughly 27% of all traffic-related deaths), and 35-44 (roughly 23% of all traffic-related deaths) were responsible for most of the alcohol-related traffic fatalities in the US, but underaged drivers in the 15-20 (17%) were also strongly affected2. In these cases, we’re defining “drunk” as having a Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) of ≥0.08 grams of alcohol/deciliter of blood, but lower concentrations even down to 0.01 are also dangerous3. How much is too much? Well, impairment begins even at very low concentrations. Alcohol is rapidly absorbed across the lining of the stomach and small intestines, and it is accumulated in the bloodstream until it’s metabolized in the liver. Relaxation, loss of visual acuity, and loss of judgement begin to become noticeable at around 0.02. To give you an idea of how 0.02 “feels”, if you’re starting to feel “warm and “happy”, you’re likely around 0.02. By 0.05, you’re feeling relaxed, and “loose” with lower inhibitions. Remember: there have been drinking-related deaths even at 0.01….so get a ride home….call a friend, call a taxi, call an Uber. Don’t take any chances. By 0.08, you’re legally drunk, and you shouldn’t be even thinking about driving. To provide some additional context, 0.15 is around where you are when you’re vomiting or having trouble with your balance3.

Folks, we at Ditmire Motorworks genuinely care about your wellbeing! PLEASE think before you drink, and we look forward to many happy years helping you to take care of yourself, your families, and your vehicles!

Mercedes-Benz has a long history and well-deserved reputation for excellence in safety feature. One of the reasons for this is the tireless work of one man: Bela Barenyi (1907-1997), a Hungarian Engineer who worked for Austria-Fiat, Steyr, and Adler Automobiles before joining the Daimler-Benz team in 1939. By that time, he had already developed an impressive resume, having designed the Volkswagen “Beetle” in 1925. Once at Daimler-Benz, he conceptualized a revolutionary new way of thinking of automobile frames, envisioning a “passenger safety cell” flanked by “crumple zones” designed to compress and absorb the energies involved in collisions through controlled deformations, with the safety cell remaining undeformed. He began work in the late 1940’s on his design, and, by 1951 and with the issuing of Patent 845 157, the passenger safety cell was ready to be realized in commercial automobiles. In 1959, the World got to experience this design in the Mercedes-Benz W 111 Model, called the “Fintail” for its distinctive tail fin look1.

Add to this the collapsible steering column, a later invention also credited to Barenyi, and one can see how he earned the title “The Father of Passive Safety”. He was inducted into the Automotive Hall of Fame in 19942.

Although we may take these technologies for granted now, it is significant to realize that, at that time, automobile manufacturers were “steering clear” (pun intended) of safety issues as talking points. Up until the 1970’s, many feared that discussions around car accidents were “deal killers” for auto sales. We can give a lot of credit to men like Bela Barenyi for thinking “ahead of the curve”.

Summer Checklist

Before you hit the road this summer, check tires, brakes, fluids, and more. Use this essential car maintenance checklist to travel safely and confidently.

With Summer already upon us and vacation time on the horizon, you might be looking at a future that involves a lot of driving. If that’s the case, you should consider being certain that your vehicle is in good shape before doing so. There are a number of things you should include in that assessment:

            1.

           Tires:

when was the last time you really looked at them? Is there any cracking or uneven wearing? If so, you need to consider getting a professional alignment and balancing assessment to be sure that there aren’t any serious problems. Not only will this make your car safer to drive, but you’ll get better gas mileage with proper alignment and balancing. Obviously, tire pressure is another thing you’ll want to check. Be sure all tires are inflated to their recommended pressures. While you’re at it, how’s the tread on the tires? If you’re not sure, try the old tried-and-true method of placing a penny upside down (Abe Lincoln’s head upside down) into your tread, and ask yourself: can I see the top of his head?

If you can, your tire tread is worn down, and you should consider replacing the tire or tires. Also, don’t forget to check your spare tire! If you see some problems that need fixing, we at Ditmire Motorworks are here to help.

            2.

           Brakes:

obviously, being able to have adequate braking power is critical if you’ve got some driving to do! Don’t mess around with these, if it’s been a while since you’ve had brake work, have a professional take a look! Pads, shoes, and rotors should all be inspected as well as fluid levels to ensure maximum safety.

            3.

           Battery:

unless you don’t mind being stranded, make sure your battery isn’t going to let you down. Check the battery connections to be sure they’re tight and free of corrosion. You can do that yourself and clean the connections with a wire brush, or we’re happy to do it for you. This is particularly necessary if your battery is more than two years old.

            4.

           Belts and Hoses:

these are sometimes overlooked by drivers, but they’re absolutely essential parts of your electrical, power steering, and cooling systems, and they need to be properly maintained. Belts need to be tight….belt and hoses also need to be free from cracks, and there shouldn’t be leaks. If either of these are problems, come see us, and we’ll take care of you!

            5.

           Fluids and Filters:

make sure that all fluids are topped off, and make sure that filters are clean and functional. Clogged air filters are going to limit performance and could lead to bigger problems down the road (pun intended!). Getting air filters replaced, especially before big road trips, can lead to better gas mileage as well as performance. Also, if your vehicle is a bit older, you might want to have your radiator checked for corrosion. We’re happy to check for you as well as all the other things just mentioned.

            6.

           Air Conditioning and Windshield Wipers:

no one likes sitting in or riding in a hot car! Come visit us and make sure your AC is in tip-top condition before really big roadtrips! Likewise, it can frustrating, scary, and dangerous if your windshield wipers are not doing their job during a storm. Get these checked out before heading out on the road! Also consider carrying spare windshield washer fluid in the event that you deplete your reservoir.

Make sure YOU ARE checking off all the boxes before heading out, and come see us at Ditmire Motorworks if you want to be absolutely sure you’re ready to go!

Roadside Emergencies: What You Need To Have On Hand

Stay prepared for breakdowns with our guide to roadside emergency kits. Learn what tools, supplies, and gear you should always keep in your vehicle.

For many years, forward-thinking drivers have been able to avail themselves of many professional roadside emergency kits. There are multiple reviews of commercially available products

    <sup>

           1-3

which can help you make informed choices and even order online. However, if you’re more of a do-it-yourself sort or person, let’s consider what the “must haves” are for such a kit.

Jumper Cables + Portable Jump Starter:

we’ve mentioned before that jumper cables are definitely a necessity, especially for long-distance travel, but what if there are no other cars around you when your battery goes cold? In those cases, a portable jump starter

      <sup>

can be a life-saver. Check out our reference for this device and consider rolling with one “waiting in the wings”.

            First Aid Kit:

for the sake of brevity, we’ll save listing the must-have components in another article specially devoted to first aid kits, but having a good and complete first aid kit when travelling is always a good idea and a practice we recommend.

            Flash Light + Batteries:

flashlights are obvious essential tools to have if something goes wrong at night….and having extra batteries on-hand to make sure you can use it without worrying about power is always a recommended practice.

            Utility Knife + Basic Tools:

having a Swiss Army knife, a multitool, or utility blade of some kind always comes in handy during emergency situations as does carrying a few common tools such as wrenches, screwdrivers, pliers, etc.. This doesn’t mean that you need to carry around your whole tool collection with you, but a few key pieces can come in handy in a tight spot.

            Duct Tape:

if you’ve ever had to double as “MacGyver” to secure something, you’ll know that a good roll of duct tape can be a life saver!

            Reflective Warning Triangles or Flares:

if you have a breakdown, it’s always courteous and a good safety practice to be able to warn other drivers. This may also serve as a cue for roaming police, tow trucks, or roadside assistance personnel that may be around.

            Fire Extinguisher:

in the event of a car fire, this could well save your life!

            Tow Ropes or Chains:

especially if you plan to go off-road, these are great things to have if you find yourself stuck.

            Snow Brush + Ice Scraper:

accumulations of snow or ice in Winter can impede safe driving. Have these on-hand to prevent issues!

            Windshield Washer Fluid:

if you’ve ever driven in desert conditions, you’ll know that you burn through windshield washer fluid FAST. Don’t let you desert driving be compromised by going dry.

            Water and Food:

being trapped by a breakdown can rapidly turn deadly if you’re not prepared! Always carry ample water (gallons) and non-perishable food items.

            Blanket or Sleeping Bag:

likewise, being trapped in freezing conditions can turn deadly quickly if you’re not prepared!

Mercedes Vehicle Maintenance Plans: What You Need to Know

Confused by your Mercedes maintenance reminders? Learn what Service A and B include, when they’re due, and why they’re essential for peak performance.

Those of us who drive vehicles brought to us by Mercedes-Benz will be no strangers to the “Recommended Service” messages we sometimes get. If you’re like me, you’ve likely wondered what do these mean and what do they entail? Some of you may have even asked “are they really necessary”? Well, first of all, let’s answer the last question first: if you’ve invested in a Mercedes-Benz vehicle, pre-owned or brand new, chances are that you wanted a vehicle that was precision-engineered and able to deliver a superior driving experience. Based on the increased complexity of engineering that Mercedes Benz vehicles typically involve as well as YOUR expectations for performance, the answer is an unequivocal YES! To yield that superior performance, you’ve got to put some effort into maintaining your vehicle! The other two questions are asked often enough by our customers that we thought it would be helpful to make their answers more widely known:

            1.

           Service Level A

refers to the most basic service visit, and it’s a common part of recommended maintenance for all Mercedes vehicles newer than 2009. So, how about some details:

First Service Level A Check is due at 1 year or 10,000 miles after acquiring your vehicle, whichever comes first

Subsequent Service Checks due approximately every 2 years or 20,000 miles

Synthetic oil and oil filter replacements

            Fluid level checks and adjustments

Tire pressure checks, visual inspections or tires, and adjustments

            Brake component visual inspection

            Vehicle maintenance counter reset

Obviously, if a technician notices anything leaking, cracked, worn, or “off-kilter” you’ll be informed and given the opportunity to have some other work done, too, but, if no other issues are noted, that’s IT for the Service Level A!

            2.

           Service Level B

refers to a bit more involved service visit that typically begins 10,000 miles or 1 year after your first Service A visit. Let’s look at some details:

First Service Level B Check is typically due 1 year or 10,000 miles after the first Service Level A Check

Subsequent Service Level B checks are due approximately every two years or 20,000 miles after the initial one

Synthetic oil and oil filter replacements

            Brake fluid replacement

            Brake component visual inspection

            Cabin air filters replaced

Engine air filter may be replaced

            Fluid level checks and adjustments

Tire pressure checks, visual inspections or tires, and adjustments

            Vehicle maintenance counter reset

Again, if your technician notices anything while performing the service inspection, there may be additional work suggested, and you’ll be given the information YOU need to make an informed decision about that additional work.

Keep Your Provisions Close At-Hand

Planning a road trip? Make sure your car is stocked with key provisions like water, snacks, chargers, and emergency kits to stay safe and comfortable.

If you’re looking forward to going on vacation this Summer, and your vacation is going to involve some driving, make sure you’ve got your provisions stocked up before you go! We’ve mentioned before about vehicle safety and making sure you’re roadworthy, but let’s take a moment to address personal provisions that you should consider taking along. There are obviously a million things you could also bring, but we’ve cherry-picked a list of things we’ve found most useful.

            Water:

we recommend making sure you’ve got adequate water. Keeping gallon jugs of clean water are always a good idea, especially if covering large distances in poorly-populated areas. If you like it cold and refreshing, consider taking along a cooler. Yes, soft drinks are great and tasty to take along, but consider always having water as a backup for emergencies.

            Snacks:

no one likes being around “hangry” passengers, especially little kids. Keeping “Die Kinder” (“The Kids” in German) occupied can be a challenge, so plan accordingly as they can quickly lead to distracted driving. Driving for long distances on an empty stomach can also lead to trouble if you’re blood sugar-sensitive. Consider taking along some quick and convenient snacks just to keep everyone “topped” off is a good idea.

            USB Charging Cable and GPS:

remember the “old days” of maps and having to ask for directions? Yeah, we’re trying to forget those, too! GPS are a modern must-have for travel, particularly when visiting unfamiliar areas or plotting good navigational routes. If your vehicle doesn’t have a built-in GPS system, make sure you’re covered not only with your handy dandy handheld device but also with w USB charging cable to be sure you’ve got the “juice” to get where you’re going! A dashboard cellphone mount is also a “nice-to-have”.

            Roadside Emergency Kits:

these are always a good idea for the occasional emergency situations as well as for peace-of-mind. These are available at many hardware stores as well as “superstores” and also online and are definitely smart investments. We’ll go into specifics about what should be included in a later, more focused article, so keep your eyes open for that.

            First Aid Kit:

so long as we’re in “kit mode”, we should also consider having a good, complete first aid kit handy for any unforeseen medical problems or injuries that might come up. In the interest of brevity, we’ll spare you the specifics of what should be included for another article.

            Jumper Cables:

if these are not already included in your roadside emergency kit, a good pair of jumper cables can be a lifesaver! Make sure you’re not hitting the road without them!

Portable Tire Inflator and Tire Gauge:

flat tires are always annoying to have to deal with, so make sure you’re prepared. We’ve mentioned before about checking your spare tire before hitting the road, but we’d also recommend a portable tire inflator that can be run off your cigarette lighter socket (see here:

) as this will eliminate the need to find an external electrical outlet. Of course, a tire gauge is also handy to have with you!

            Blankets, Towels, and Pillows:

these always find use on the longer trips, especially if travelling with kids. Having these around for any “road naps” that you might need are also good ideas.

            Hand Sanitizer:

these always find numerous uses on the longer trips!

First Aid Kits: What You Need To Have On-Hand

Be prepared for roadside emergencies. Discover essential first aid kit items every driver should carry, from bandages to burn gel and beyond.

We’ve mentioned before that good and complete First Aid Kits should be a staple of your automotive travel. You may not ever need to use yours, but this is a case where you really can’t afford to be without one. With these, having more in those kits is probably a wise choice, too, so lets review what first-responders commonly advise and have worked with companies to promote

    <sup>

            Bandages:

included in this category, we’re including triangular bandages which may be employed as an arm sling, a head dressing, a compression tourniquet, or a split covering. Obviously, an assortment of various smaller bandages for minor cuts are included, too.

            Compression Bandages:

we’re breaking this out as a separate item as they have a very specific application: control of inflammation or swelling.

            Adhesive Tape + Scissors:

these are needed to secure wound dressings or bandages to prevent their falling off or dislocation.

            Gauze + Non-Adherent Gauze Pads:

having 1-2 roles gauze on-hand is a wise idea to be able to wrap limbs or appendages, and gauze pads may be used to dress wounds after treatment. We’ll also include eye pads in this category.

            Latex or Nitrile Gloves:

if you’re administering first aid to someone, it’s always important to keep yourself safe from infection. Latex gloves (nitrile if you have a latex allergy) will protect you from any infectious pathogens which might compromise you.

            Hand Sanitizer:

recent public health events have made us all a lot more conscious of how clean hands can prevent the unwanted spread of disease-causing agents.

            Tweezers:

these are definitely must-haves for the removal of splinters or any debris that might penetrate flesh.

Saline Wash for Eyes or Wounds:

splashes of noxious compounds to the eyes can blind you. Likewise, debris ejected into the eyes may cause permanent visual impairment. Having saline on-hand can prevent damage to the eyes or blindness. Saline is also indispensable for the cleaning of wounds, so having an ample supply on-hand is a wise practice.

            Triple Antibiotic Ointment:

open wounds may easily and quickly become infected, and infection, left untreated, can lead to sepsis and septic shock. Being able to adequately disinfect wounds goes hand-in-hand with keep them clean and well-irrigated.

            Fresh Hydrogen Peroxide:

hydrogen peroxide rapidly degrades in the presence of open wounds, giving off oxygen free radicals that can effectively disinfect wounds, particularly deep ones. Beware! Hydrogen peroxide degrades in the bottle, too, so make sure yours in FRESH!

            Antiseptic Wipes:

are also good for cleaning and disinfecting injuries prior to administration of topical agents such as #6.

            Burn Cream/Gel:

burns may continue to cause damage after the initial burn events. It is important to minimize damage and reduce tissue inflammation as quickly as possible to avoid infections.

            Instant Cold Packs:

these may also help reduce tissue damage and swelling following burns, bites, or injuries that result in swelling.

            Anti-Inflammatories + Medications:

both oral (NSAIDS such as aspirin, acetaminophen, or ibuprofen) and topical (topical cortisone and calamine) agents are useful to have. Dramamine, antihistamines, and cold and flu medications are also handy.

The Check Engine Light: A Misunderstood "Good Guy"

Don’t ignore that dashboard warning! Learn common causes of check engine lights, what they mean, and why early diagnosis protects your vehicle and budget.

Check engine lights….we’ve all had them....we’ve all had anxieties because of them. But “check engine” is vague….what could be wrong? Should I be worried? Do I need to do this NOW, or can it wait until I can get it looked at?

The check engine light is also called the “Malfunction Indicator Lamp” (MIL)….which, again, sounds serious but is also pretty vague. WHAT is malfunctioning? Is my trusted vehicle breaking down? It’s important to remain calm and look for anything else which might be noticeable concurrent with the warning light. Ask yourself the following:

Are there other issues which became immediately apparent when the check engine light came on? Any change in performance or handling? What was going on when the light came on: Was I starting up? Did I just get fuel? Was I just rolling along normally when it came on? TAKE NOTE OF ALL THE DETAILS! Are any other lights coming on? Do I notice ANYTHING out of the ordinary after it came on?

We advise you to think about these things and make a mental or written list as you head in to have the problem diagnosed by a professional. The more you can tell your service advisor, the more data they can pass along to the technician, and that can assist with proper diagnosis. If you’re close, we recommend you stop by to see us, but, if you’re not close, find someone else close by. WE CARE ABOUT YOUR SAFETY!

So, how long can I (or YOU) drive without getting the car checked? If the check engine light is blinking, the answer is: get into a shop ASAP! But, even if the check engine light isn’t blinking or goes off again, we still recommend putting safety first and getting a qualified technician to have a look at it. If the check engine light is on, it’s likely that you’re releasing excess pollutants, which, at the very least, can impact gas mileage.

So, let’s look into some common causes and look at how serious they might be! First of all, it’s important to realize that check engine lights can indicate a wide range of potential problems, going from fairly minor, easy fixes to more serious issues that could necessitate repairs. It’s important not to simply ignore them, even if the causes ARE minor issues. Minor issues, depending on the specifics, can become major ones if left unattended.

            Loose or missing gas cap:

you might not have thought about it, but your gas cap prevents excess fuel vapors from being released into the air. This also maintains a pressurization of your engine, and the check engine light will let you know if this pressure is compromised. Before taking your car into the shop, you may want to first try removing the gas cap and then re-tightening it to see if that solves the problem.

            Issues with the oxygen sensor:

your engine works around the principles of internal combustion, the ignition of a fuel/air mixture to create controlled bursts which move your pistons. The oxygen sensor monitors how much unburned oxygen is being put out in your exhaust. If the oxygen in the exhaust drops below normal levels, the check engine light will let you know.

Issues with the mass airflow sensor:

To function normally, air needs to be taken in, combined with fuel, and ignited by the electrical sparks of the spark plugs. The mass airflow sensor determines how much fuel is needed for the amount of air entering the engine. Malfunctioning of this sensor will trigger the check engine light.

Issues with the spark plugs or plug wires:

If a spark plug or multiple plugs or their plug wires become defective, the check engine light will let you know.

            Issues with the catalytic converter:

the catalytic converter is responsible for converting toxic carbon monoxide, various nitrogen oxides, and hydrocarbons into less harmful gases such as carbon dioxide, nitrogen, and water vapor. This ensures that the exhaust is “cleaner” and less environmentally harmful. A failing catalytic converter will not only trigger your check engine light, but also lead to reduced engine performance. A rotten egg smell combined with the check engine light can also point directly to a failing catalytic converter.

            Issues with the vacuum system:

a car’s vacuum system uses suction generated by the engine to power various systems. Basically, the pistons pull air into the cylinders during the intake stroke, creating engine vacuum, and, in combination with vacuum pumps and hoses, that vacuum pressure is distributed to power things ranging from power brake boosters and turbocharge wastegate actuators to emissions controls. As this represents a critical engine system, a leak or loss of pressure will trigger a check engine light.

Issues with the exhaust gas (ERG) recirculation valve:

this system works with the catalytic converter to reduce the amount of nitrogen oxides released in your car’s exhaust. Malfunction of the ERG valve will trigger a check engine light.

            Issues with the car’s battery:

if a battery has gone bad and needs to be replaced, it will trigger a check engine light that is generally accompanied by difficulty in cranking the engine on startup.

So, a check engine light can mean many things ranging from gas caps being too loose or cracked to problems with vacuum pressure which can impact multiple downstream systems to emissions problems which can make our engines function less optimally while contributing to pollution. It’s truly a “misunderstood good guy” that can let us know there are issues with multiple systems that keep us and those around us safe.

Learn why summer is the deadliest season for drivers and how to stay safe behind the wheel. Avoid distractions and get your vehicle road-ready today.

This year, as with preceding years, the days between Memorial Day (Monday, May 26) and Labor Day (Monday, September 1) are expected to be the most dangerous and deadliest days for driving.

With people taking vacations or engaging in Summertime activities, more people are on the roads, including young drivers who may lack experience.

The CDC warns us that drivers between the ages of 16 and 19 are 3x more likely to be involved in fatal car crashes during this time

This is speculated to be due to a number of risk factors including general inexperience driving, underage drinking, not taking proper safety precautions such as wearing seatbelts, speeding or driving unsafely, and distracted driving.

This last behavior, of course, is not just a “teen thing”: with the advent of handheld cellular devices, we’ve all experienced those “pings” when we receive phone calls, texts, or messages….and we’re often guilty of looking to see who’s contacting us. If we receive a text, we may even take a few moments, brief as they seem, to respond. Distraction coupled with inexperience can be fatal. Even a few seconds of distraction can be deadly.

The FCC warns us that 8% of fatal crashes, 12% of injury crashes, and 11% of all police-reported motor vehicle crashes resulted from distracted driving. And, while hands-free devices are safer options, distractions of any kind can be detrimental. With more than 3,300 people being killed and nearly 290,000 people being injured in these situations, this is definitely not something to be taken lightly

Behaviors such as eating or attempting to perform other tasks while driving can also end up in disaster. With more people on the roads over the Summer, the odds are higher that you could end up being involved in an accident, so, please, if you’re planning to be on the road this Summer, please be mindful of not only your own responsible behaviors, but also be on the lookout for any other drivers who might be engaging in unsafe behaviors. And if you’re unsure of the condition or “roadworthiness” of your vehicle, please stop by, and we’re happy to check it over and contribute to your safety!

Your brakes are your first line of defense. Whether you're navigating traffic in Absecon or coasting down the Garden State Parkway, your braking system is what keeps you—and everyone around you—safe. Unlike basic maintenance items like oil changes or tire rotations, brake repair involves both mechanical and hydraulic components working in harmony. This includes:

It’s not always obvious when your brakes are wearing down. Some symptoms build gradually, while others seem to appear overnight. Here are some key indicators that it’s time to bring your vehicle to Ditmire Motorworks in Absecon:

The Cost of Ignoring Brake Issues

Let’s be real—ignoring brake problems won’t make them go away. In fact, it usually means a more expensive repair is just around the corner. Here’s what could happen:

            Worn pads can damage rotors

            , leading to costly replacements

            Low brake fluid

may indicate a leak, compromising your entire system

            Overheated brakes

can lead to warping or total failure

            Unbalanced braking

In this in-depth guide, we’ll walk you through what complete engine service really entails, why it’s essential for your vehicle’s health, and how Ditmire Motorworks delivers expert care that drivers in Absecon and surrounding areas can trust.

           What Is Complete Engine Service?

Complete engine service refers to a thorough examination, maintenance, and repair of all major engine systems. Unlike a quick tune-up or an oil change, it involves comprehensive diagnostics and targeted repairs that address both current issues and potential future problems.

At Ditmire Motorworks, our engine services can include:

Inspection of gaskets, belts, seals, and timing components

Spark plug replacement and ignition system checks

Oil and coolant system inspection and flush

Fuel system cleaning and injector servicing

            Valve adjustments and compression testing

Repair or replacement of internal engine parts (if needed)

It’s a proactive way to avoid breakdowns, restore lost performance, and extend the life of your vehicle.

Why Engine Health Should Be a Top Priority

Many drivers overlook engine maintenance until they’re stuck on the side of the road. But the truth is, catching problems early can save thousands in major repairs. Think of complete engine service as a health checkup for your car—it identifies inefficiencies and fixes them before they snowball into serious issues.

Here in Absecon, we see all kinds of road conditions: heavy traffic, fluctuating weather, even salt air from the nearby coast. These factors take a toll on your engine. Routine engine service ensures that everything under the hood is operating with precision, helping your car handle the demands of daily driving.

Neglecting engine service can lead to:

            Poor fuel economy

            Hard starts and stalling

            Loss of power

            Increased emissions

            Risk of total engine failure

At Ditmire Motorworks, we’re committed to preventing those outcomes with our ASE and AAA-certified technicians who know what to look for and how to fix it—efficiently and affordably.

           Preventive Maintenance vs. Emergency Repairs

Too often, engine service is reactive—drivers wait until something goes wrong. But at Ditmire Motorworks, we focus on prevention. Regular engine inspections can catch early warning signs like:

            Oil leaks

            Coolant loss

            Irregular engine noise

            Check engine light triggers

            Fuel system inefficiencies

By addressing these issues early, we help you avoid costly engine rebuilds or replacements. It’s always less expensive to maintain than it is to repair.

When Should You Schedule Complete Engine Service?

Here are some good rules of thumb:

Every 30,000 to 60,000 miles, depending on the vehicle and manufacturer

If your check engine light comes on

If you notice performance issues (e.g., rough idling, misfiring, or strange sounds)

            After purchasing a used vehicle

Before long road trips or seasonal changes

           Why Comprehensive Tire Service Matters

Too often, drivers don’t think about their tires until there’s a problem—usually a flat, uneven wear, or poor handling in bad weather. But your tires affect every aspect of your vehicle’s performance. At Ditmire Motorworks, we’ve seen firsthand how regular tire service can prevent breakdowns, save money on gas, and improve overall safety on the road.

Comprehensive tire service goes beyond the basics. It includes:

Tire Rotation: The Unsung Hero of Maintenance

Many drivers underestimate how important tire rotations really are. Tires wear at different rates depending on your drivetrain (FWD, RWD, AWD), how you drive, and road conditions. Rotating your tires every 5,000 to 7,500 miles ensures even wear, longer tire life, and better fuel economy.

We make this part of our standard tire service routine at Ditmire Motorworks. If your tires are showing early signs of uneven wear, our team can rotate and balance them right away, helping you avoid bigger problems down the line.

The Importance of Tire Balancing and Alignment Checks

Balancing tires ensures they spin smoothly without creating vibration. Even a tiny imbalance can cause annoying shaking in your steering wheel, especially at higher speeds. We use advanced balancing tools at Ditmire Motorworks to eliminate these issues and give you a more comfortable, stable ride.

Alignment is just as important. While alignment isn’t included in all tire services, we check for warning signs during your visit. Misaligned wheels cause uneven wear, poor handling, and lower fuel efficiency. If needed, we’ll refer you for alignment work to protect your tires and keep your vehicle tracking straight.

Flat Repairs: What’s Fixable and What’s Not

We get this question a lot: can you fix a flat, or do you need a new tire?

The answer depends on the damage. Punctures in the tread area can usually be repaired safely, especially if they’re under ¼ inch wide. However, damage to the sidewall or shoulder means replacement is the safer option. At Ditmire Motorworks, we never cut corners. If a flat tire is fixable, we’ll patch it properly; if not, we’ll help you choose the best replacement for your needs and budget.

Seasonal Considerations: Winter, Summer, and All-Season Tires

Not all tires are created equal. Where and how you drive in Absecon plays a big role in what kind of tires you need.
