1. Oil: Proper lubrication is necessary for preventing premature wearing down of critical engine parts. It must be stated that, without proper lubrication, engine parts will experience much more friction and heat than they were designed to tolerate. Parts melt, warp, and break under those stresses, and those repairs, alone, will add up. Degraded oil also creates sludge, which can clog your engine and prevent proper oil flow through it. Thus, sticking to a rigid schedule of oil changes every 3,000-5,000 miles is a front-line priority in keeping your engine healthy and in maintaining reasonable fuel efficiency. If your car is having to work harder, it burns more fuel. However, it’s not just the oil changes. The quality of the oil used is a critical part of proper maintenance. Fully synthetic motor oils are a go-to for European import autos for several reasons: the oil molecules are fairly homogeneous in size and shape, reducing the viscosity that you will see with natural, unrefined motor oils. Fully synthetic motor oils also resist the sludge-producing thermal breakdown you see with natural oils. 2. Transmission: Most people don’t think much about transmission services until something starts to go wrong, but, by then, damage is done. Getting fluid services every 40,000 miles and using the appropriate high-performance transmission fluid for your car ensures that proper lubrication, cooling, cleaning, and hydraulic pressure are maintained and save on having to get transmission repairs later. A little attention to regular service, which isn’t expensive, can prevent a transmission replacement, which gets expensive. 3. Brakes: Obviously, being able to STOP is vitally important. Brake wear is a very progressive problem that you may not notice until the later stages, but, once you do, understand that it’s only going to get worse from there. Car parts don’t magically fix themselves, and no one wants to risk brake failure. Brake pads typically last 25,000-70,000 miles, and rotors 30,000-70,000 miles, but any grinding, screeching, or difficulty in stopping should trigger a trip to the shop. 4. Tires and Wheels: If you’ve ever experienced a blowout at speed, you’ll realize the importance of making sure your tires are roadworthy. Checking tire pressures routinely can ensure that you’re doing the first thing in maintaining them, but WHEEL ALIGNMENT is another aspect you need to consider. Your tires will last longer and be in better shape if you make sure your wheel alignment is maintained. Misaligned wheels put uneven stresses on tires that can compromise them and shorten their lifespans. Misaligned wheels can also contribute to expensive issues with your suspension system that you’d do better to avoid. Remember that Euro imports need 4-WHEEL ALIGNMENTS. 5. Check Engine Lights: Don’t be guilty of not getting these investigated in a timely fashion! The causes can be simple malfunctions that compromise your emissions, but they can also be the warning sign that something’s about to go bad. Especially, if the check engine light is flashing, you need to pull over and get a tow. Catastrophic engine failure will likely “total” your car, so don’t risk it. They’re called “warning lights” for a reason, and, no, it can’t wait until next week.

As we move forward toward the longer days and warmer, sunny weather of late Spring and Summer, many of us look forward to outdoor celebrations, barbecues, and beach time. However, we need to caution that this time of year sees increases in drunk driving, so always be mindful. Year round, around 30% of all traffic fatalities involve drunk driving. In fact, between 2015 and 2024, an average of 11,500 people died each year as a result of driving while intoxicated (DWI)….but that percentage tends to rise during Summer and peak on the 4th of July1. It’s an old story: people partying and having fun, a few drinks are consumed, and someone will invariably think they’re OK to drive. But how much is too much? Blood Alcohol Concentrations need to meet or exceed 0.08g/dl in 49 of the 50 states except Utah, where a BAC of 0.05 is the limit. To give you a rough idea of how much that is, it works out to about 4 drinks within 2 hours for men and 3 for women to achieve 0.082. To give you an idea of how these levels correspond to feelings you may experience, consider this: A. At a BAC of 0.02g/dl, you feel relaxed, your mood changes, and you may feel a little warm. You’ll also find it more difficult to perform two tasks at once, and your eyesight may be a bit impaired1. B. At a BAC of 0.05g/ml, you begin to experience “relaxed judgement”, “released inhibitions”, loss of fine motor control, and reduced reflexes and response times. You probably feel good and maybe even a bit silly….but you’re drunk1. C. At a BAC of 0.08g/dl, your balance and coordination are functionally impaired. Judgement, reflexes, self-control, and reasoning are also impaired. Your speech may also begin to slur1. D. At a BAC of 0.10g/dl, your speech is badly slurred, your coordination is badly reduced, and your thinking is slowed1. We won’t go on with the higher BAC symptoms, but suffice it to say that many of don’t begin vomiting until around 0.15g/dl1….so if you’re at that point, you’re way over the limit and a danger to yourself or others if you’re behind the wheel of a car. We’re still more than a month away from Memorial Day, but did you know that the 100 days between Memorial Day (Monday, May 25, 2026) and Labor Day (Monday, September 7, 2026) are known as the “100 deadliest days” when it comes to traffic fatalities? In particular, this is a time that sees VERY high rates of traffic fatalities involving teen drivers, many of whom are fairly new to driving and may not exercise the caution that older, more seasoned driver have. In fact, last year it was reported that, between 2019 and 2023, 13,135 people nationwide were killed in car crashes involving teen drivers, with 30% occurring during the 100 deadliest days. Jake Nelson, Director of Traffic Safety advocacy and Research at Triple-A, believes that the greater unsupervised time teens spend during the Summer Vacation is a major contributing factor in this trend, and he encourages families to strongly consider additional driver education classes offered through Triple-A as well as parent-teen safe driving agreements to set clearly-defines expectations for new drivers1. As car crashes are the leading cause of death for American teenagers, this is great, sound advice! It is speculated that the underlying causes of these statistics involve a combination of factors: • School is out, and teens are eager to explore their young adulthood. Who can remember the excitement of having “new wheels” and the freedom to expand their social lives2? • Inexperience is clearly a factor. How skilled can you really be at something you’ve only been doing a short while2? • Speeding is exhilarating when you’re a new driver….I know. It’s also dangerous as things happen faster when you’re moving faster. I did my share of racing when I was a kid, and, luckily, I never got into an accident….but I DID get a lot of speeding tickets which eventually taught me to be more responsible2. • Distracted driving is deadly for all age groups, but is particularly dangerous for teens, where it accounts for around 60% of all accidents involving teens. Teach your kids to PUT THE CELL PHONE DOWN, not to eat or drink while driving, and to focus on the road2. • Drunk driving is also a major problem that spans age groups….but, with regards to teen drivers, inexperience plus impairment of reflexes and thinking can be particularly deadly. In 2022, 30% of young drivers between 15 and 20 who were killed in car accidents had BACs of 0.01g/dl2. PARENTS, BE PREPARED! Talk to YOUR young drivers and make them aware that driving is inherently dangerous: there are always risks. European import cars and trucks and their domestic counterparts have some pretty significant differences that manifest from fundamentally different priorities in their design and engineering. For example, European vehicles are typically designed to be smaller to better navigate the narrow, often winding streets of the older European towns. The larger frame sizes of “American Muscle Cars”, by contrast, were based around the concepts of POWER and spaciousness. And while European car designs tend to be more elegant and sophisticated in their aesthetics, American cars tend to prioritize more functional aesthetics, with size and practicality being placed above elegance. This dichotomy very concisely reflects the different cultural values of Europe versus the USA. In addition to being smaller, European auto design teams tend to value precision maneuverability and agility to a greater degree than American design teams. Being agile means better precision moves on narrow, winding streets, so, again, being small, fast, precise, and agile become functional outcomes of European architecture. The USA, with its “wide open spaces” doesn’t value those features to the same degree, where raw power on straight-aways and being built for long-hauls cross-country are more desirable. HOWEVER, speed limits are typically more tightly controlled in the USA than in Europe (think Autobahn), so top end speeds tend to be higher for European cars. European autos also have to conform to tighter environmental standard for emissions with their greater emphasis on environmentally friendly features. Hence, the emissions systems are more sophisticated and precisely monitored in Euro imports than in their domestic counterparts. If you’ve driven a Euro import and gotten a “check engine light” it’s usually due to malfunctions somewhere in the emissions system. Domestic brands also often lag behind their Euro counterparts in fuel economy as a result of the goal of minimal environmental impact. Lastly, transmission preferences are a major difference between Euro imports and their domestic counterparts. In Europe, manual transmissions are often preferred, but automatic transmissions are more popular in the USA, so a lot of Euro imports ARE equipped with them here. At Ditmire Motorworks, we get to meet a lot of different people, ranging from people who have been driving Euro imports for decades to people who are new to them. And some of the "newbies" can be a little nervous about how best to take care of their new rides. I can sympathize: I got my first Mercedes when I was in my 50's, and, like many, had heard that the maintenance was a bit of an ordeal. Well, it turns out it really isn't....it's just sticking to schedules. Hello, I'm Michael, and I'm the VP of Ditmire's (and Beth Harvie's Husband), and I thought I'd pass along some tips for new owners. An overarching thing I'd suggest: look at your car as an INVESTMENT....not just basic transportation. Doing the "right things" will fall out of that mindset: 1. First off, follow the recommended service and maintenance schedules that are prescribed for your car. This was always a little more loose when I drove domestic. I'm now sticking closer to the schedules and not putting stuff off. 2. Secondly, only use high-quality synthetic motor oils. When I began to look into this, it was easy and quick to see that this alone is a HUGE part of maintainenance. I also became mindful of my fluid levels: oil, coolant, brake fluids, transmission fluid, and power steering fluid. Just a little bit of attention to these can keep you problem-free! 3. Thirdly, be mindful of tire pressures and any driving issues which might be related to the tires/wheels. 4. Fourth, check belts, hoses, and batteries periodically, particularly in Winter. 5. Don't be afraid to ask for help. I was new to the Euro scene, and these cars are "computers with wheels", a long way from the '78 Buick Regal I started with back in the day! I was a customer of Ditmire's before I came to work here, and it didn't take me long to recognize the expertise that our technicians had.
